Friendly Avenue Children and Family Ministry
Friendly Avenue believes that families are the primary discipleship tool for children. Jesus has entrusted the spiritual nurturing of children primarily to parents (Deuteronomy 6:6-7, Proverbs 1:8, Ephesians 6:4). Friendly Avenue values our children as a vibrant and important part of the body of Christ. God makes it clear that the minimization of children is not acceptable (Exodus 10:7-11 and Mark 10:14-16). When we live in line with these biblical teachings our church and our families are strengthened.
At Friendly Avenue Church of Christ :
- We believe children are valuable to God and a trust bestowed to their families.
- We are committed to encouraging and equipping parents in this responsibility.
- We hope to challenge and encourage children to fully follow Jesus Christ in every aspect of life.
- We strive to provide the tools necessary to follow Christ in an increasingly complex and difficult world.
CURRICULUM
Sunday Mornings (Fall, Winter, Spring):
THE STORY FOR CHILDREN – Finding your story in God’s Story. The Story for Kids curriculum is a nationally acclaimed program developed under the leadership of renowned author Max Lucado and speaker Randy Frazee. It’s The Story—the big picture of God’s enormous love for his people—a chronological survey of the Biblical text from Creation to the Second Coming. Our text, The Story for Kids, includes selections from the New International Reader’s Version (NIrV), one of the easiest to read of all Bible translations. Written like a novel, the events, characters, and teachings come alive. The study is arranged in chronological order so students can better understand God’s plan for creation and his people. Each class covers a major narrative of the Biblical story and includes interactive material for both class and family devotional time. Your child will be forever changed by the greatest story ever told! It’s our prayer that these stories will encourage you to listen for God’s call on your life, as he helps write your own story.
To give the children the full experience of the journey through The Story, each child should have a copy of their age-related Story book at home, and sets of trading cards to review each week’s story at home.

Wednesday Evenings (Year-Round):
Exciting new experiences await children who attend Friendly Avenue’s Pioneer Clubs. Our Biblical lessons for kids help them learn about God, the Bible and themselves as they explore fun activities and make new friends.
By joining the Pioneer Clubs family, Friendly Avenue is part of a network of member churches in the United States and Canada that are committed to reaching children, age 2 through middle school, with the life-changing message of the gospel. At weekly meetings, kids dig into God’s Word, memorize Scripture, apply God’s truth to their lives and grow into young men and women who will serve Christ throughout their lives.
You’ll see your children become passionate about living for Christ! Pioneer Clubs programs are Christ-centered and Bible based—and so much fun that kids can’t wait to get there!
We know that between the ages of 4 and 14, children:
- develop a sense of right and wrong – foundational values are established. Honesty, fairness, respect, sharing, responsibility, love, discipline, manners.
- make spiritual decisions – 80% of those who come to faith in Jesus Christ make the decision to do so by the time they are 14 years old.
- establish attitudes about church – why is the church here? Why should I be involved in a church? How is my church different? What do church people believe?
- form faith “habits” – regular Bible reading, praying, memorizing Scripture, serving, sharing their faith with others.
Pioneer Clubs’ midweek kids’ church ministry program is intentionally designed to help parents take advantage of this critical window of opportunity! Pioneer Clubs wants to help you focus young minds on what’s really important: a lifelong commitment to Jesus Christ.
Today’s kids need a strong Christian education ministry, Christian kids’ clubs, and not just entertainment with a spiritual theme thrown in. Pioneer Clubs transform the lives of children by nurturing them physically, emotionally, socially, intellectually and spiritually. Helping children learn to follow Christ in every aspect of life is our underlying philosophy.
Our Ministry Program
Friendly Avenue offers five age-specific club groups for children age two through eighth grade. The following are Friendly Avenue’s Pioneer Clubs programs:
- Scooter – ages 2 – 4
- Voyager – grades K – 2
- Pathfinder – grades 3 – 5
Meeting Structure
Children’s Church Ministry Structure
Club meeting times are divided into skill building, life application, Bible exploration, Bible memory, and games. Club members have age-appropriate handbooks that they work on during Bible Exploration and activity time. Club members who attend regularly will receive Bible awards and activity awards when they complete an eight-meeting unit.
Special Events
In addition to regular meetings, clubs are encouraged to have several special events each year that parents can attend. Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter celebrations make wonderful special events. This is a great way to meet your club members’ families.
Club Curriculum Goals
Pioneer Clubs Curriculum Goals
These are the critical issues that drive Friendly’s Children’s Ministry and are the foundation for our intentional children’s ministry curriculum design.
To enable children to enter into a personal relationship with Christ and to know his Word.
- By presenting Christ as Savior and Lord, the club program gives children opportunities to experience salvation and grow spiritually.
- By training children to study Scripture and apply it to daily life, club prepares them to exercise Christian responsibility in their church, community and world.
To enable children to form healthy relationships.
- By teaching biblical purposes for the family and by recognizing sociological influences, this program helps children learn how to be contributing members in various family situations.
- By teaching that God created people to be interdependent, the club program leads children to develop healthy relationships with both peers and adults.
Outreach
While our mid-week ministry is designed to nurture the spiritual development of children in our church, you will find it also provides a great opportunity our children to minister to other children in our community.
- You will find that your church children enjoy Pioneer Clubs® so much that they will invite their friends. This is one of the most effective methods of natural outreach and to ministry kids in the community.
- You and your children will have many occasions to welcome families into a warm and caring household of faith.
