Who are the Churches of Christ?

Just like many others in the world today, we are in search of truth. We believe that truth is found in the word of God. The church, according to the Bible was established by Jesus circa 30 A.D. when the Holy Spirit was given to the Apostles on the day of Pentecost and 3000 souls were baptized into Christ in obedience to Peter’s message (Acts 2:37-41).

Some years later the church began to drift from the Apostle’s teachings. Early in the 19th century certain religious leaders, known in history as “restorationists” began calling people back to the Bible as the only authority in religious practices. These men did not advocate the starting of a new church, but rather a return to Christ's church as described in the Bible. There is no creed in the usual sense of the word. The belief of the church is stated fully and completely in the Bible. There is no other manual or discipline to which the members of the church of Christ give their allegiance. The Bible is considered as the only infallible guide to heaven. Members of the church of Christ do not conceive of themselves as a new church. Rather, the whole movement was designed to restore the church as it was originally established. Thus the Church of Christ was restored as we know it today.

Friendly Avenue Church of Christ is many things to many people. We are a community of ordinary people seeking God's will and God’s grace. We are an ethnically and internationally diverse group of worshipers representing 13 different nations. More importantly, we are members in the body of Christ Jesus, children of the King, forgiven sinners. We are eternally grateful for the blessing of having found Him. We seek and promote an increasingly close and intimate relationship with Christ. No one is perfect, but the good news is that God’s grace washes away our imperfections and encourages us to diligently seek His truths which give us hope for life with Him forever. We believe that He extends His hand to everyone, so we welcome all to come and worship God with us.

An outside observer would probably describe us as an evangelical, outreach oriented, benevolent and mission minded group of Christians. Because of the autonomy each local congregation enjoys, you may find slight differences in practice among congregations of the church, but the main tenets of Christianity are consistent. In scripture we read that Jesus is the Christ and He was crucified on a cross for our – all of mankind’s – sins. After His death, He came back to life and ascended to heaven to sit at the right hand of God, where He is now interceding on our behalf. Jesus proclaimed that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life and no one comes to the Father except through Him.

We want to share that good news with you and we welcome other seekers because we want everyone to know who Jesus is, and how wonderful it is to know Him. We certainly want to share this knowledge with those seeking truth and salvation, but more importantly we pray that if and when you visit with us, you will see our faith in action and decide to join us in honoring God Almighty.

How do I become a member of the Church of Christ?

To become a member of the church you must become a child of God. To become a child of God you must be saved. Nobody can be a child of God and not be saved. Salvation is offered to us through the grace of God in the person of our Savior Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9; 2 Timothy 1:9-10). We initially respond to this offer of grace by accepting Christ as our Lord. In doing so we:

  • believe that Jesus is the Son of God (John 8:24),
  • repent of our sins (Luke 13:3; Acts 2:38, 17:30),
  • confess faith in Him (Matthew 10:32; Romans 10:9-10),
  • are baptized for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38; 22:16; 1 Peter 3:21).In baptism we are united with Christ (Romans 6:3-5) and receive His Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38).

At this time we are added to His church – God’s family (Acts 2:47; Galatians 3:26-7).
